How Has Music Piracy Evolved as a Result of Technology?

In my final year of Film, Television, and Media Studies, I undertook a comprehensive 11,000-word dissertation project titled "How Has Music Piracy Evolved as a Result of Technology". This research project, which received a First Class Honours grade, traced the fascinating journey of music piracy from its early days of vinyl bootlegging to the modern era of streaming services.

My work explored how digital technology drastically changed the way we consume music and led to a rise in music piracy. This transformation sparked numerous debates about the legal and ethical aspects of piracy.

In my dissertation, I conducted a thorough review of various resources, including academic papers, case studies, and industry reports. This enabled me to understand the historical shift from physical to digital music platforms and the role of modern innovations such as streaming services.

A key part of my research was studying the evolution of piracy techniques over time. I investigated how technology has been both a catalyst for music piracy and a tool to fight against it. I also delved into the broader impact of these changes on the music industry, consumers, and the law.

My findings offer valuable insights for those involved in the music industry, policy makers, and academics. The goal was to help develop strategies that address the ongoing challenges and opportunities within the digital music landscape. The research provided a clear understanding of the complex dynamics of music piracy, showing its potential to influence future music experiences.
